Up next are two of my favorite high school races of the weekend: the Philadelphia Catholic League and Public League boys 4x400 relays. They always get to run in front of this huge crowd, and it has to be a thrill for them.
Off goes the Catholic League race. St. Joe's Prep ran 3:13 indoors recently. They have to beat 3:17.67 to make the Championship of America race.
Miles Green is pushing toward the finish... St. Joe's Prep wins the race by a long way. And they do qualify for the Championship of America with a time of 3:15.56. A new record time for the Penn Relays Catholic League boys 4x400, breaking the 3:18.11 mark set by the Prep last year.
Miles Green's anchor leg was 48.05. The Prep's time is the fourth-fastest of the day overall.
And now the Public League race is underway. There are 19 teams in it. That makes for quite a traffic jam at the starting line and handoffs.
Northeast and Imhotep are 1-2 and close going into the final lap.
Imhotep wins it in 3:27.38.
The big crowd applauds the last-place runner from Ben Franklin High, who's way behind everyone else but is celebrated for finishing. One of the great traditions here.
